When Russell turned age 74, his adult children (of which I am the second to the youngest) started building memories with him once a year with special trips or adventures. Fishing trips on the Chesapeake, setting the Aviation World Speed Record for the fastest flight from Washington, D.C. to Rome (and only admiting when pressured that we actually flew to the other "Rome", the one in New York state), week long catamaran charters, visits to Fortress Monroe where he lived in the '20s, nine-day voyages down the Intracoastal Waterway and many more adventures.
We were afraid of losing him and wanted the time to build more memories. Who knew we would be blessed with two more decades. Still, the time seemed to race. He will be missed by many more than just the family.
